New Name: African American Health Institute 5/2005

The African American Health Initiative (AAHI) is perhaps the most significant community-based resource focused solely on improving health among the African American community. Nearly 50 organizations throughout San Bernardino communities have agreed to work on the initiative to bring data, service coordination, expertise and other resources to address the health disparities of African Americans. The mission of AAHI is aimed at “reducing and eliminating health risks and improving overall health quality among the African American population in San Bernardino County by building coordinated health systems”.

The Sickle Cell Disease Foundation of California was the first non-profit, social service sickle cell disease organization established in the United States.

Founded in 1957, the SCDFC has maintained a viable and reputable organization for over 45 years. With a growing population of individuals with sickle cell disease and sickle cell trait, the primary focus of the SCDFC is to educate, screen and counsel those persons at risk of having children with sickle cell disease and other hemoglobin disorders.
